- When a student asks for help, or seems stuck, Jade sends a screenshot of the page, the page’s text and their question to our server to write a hint.
- To notice when a student is stuck, it counts clicks and key presses. It never records what was typed.
- A student can also ask out loud. Their microphone is on only while they hold the keys or until they tap Finish. The audio becomes their question and is never stored.
- Screenshots are never stored.
- OpenAI writes the hints from the screenshot, page text and question, later checks how a hint landed, and helps write new practice problems for testing Jade, as the next points explain. Deepgram turns a spoken question into text and reads hints aloud. They process this data only to do that for us.
- To learn which hints help, Jade looks at the next question a student asks within 15 minutes of a hint. If there is one, OpenAI reads the problem and the hint again to judge whether the hint gave away the answer. If that next question was the student’s answer to Jade, OpenAI reads it too, to judge whether it was right and whether it showed understanding. No screenshot is used for this.
- We store the student’s nickname and class, their questions, the hints Jade gave, and labels about how each hint landed, such as whether the student’s next answer was right. Their teacher sees how hints landed only as a weekly summary by topic and hint level, with no student names.
- Each week, a Jade developer reviews the hints that helped least, from the problems Jade saw and the hints it gave, with no student names, classes, questions or answers. A problem can still quote a student’s own work. OpenAI may read a problem to help write a new one for testing Jade; the problems we keep for testing are written fresh, never a student’s work.
- Teachers sign in with Google; we keep their name and email.
- We never sell data or use it for ads.
- Jade’s use of information received through its Chrome extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
